This is the territory of Australia so any travellers planning to visit this country will need to clear customs in Australia. A valid passport will still be required to enter the country.

• Under the new quarantine regime for the Indian Ocean Territories, all fresh fruit and vegetables can only be imported from Australia if free of pests and diseases. No fresh fruit and vegetables can be imported from other countries including Christmas Island. The products must also be clean and free of soil or other contamination. Upon arrival, quarantine officers will be required to inspect fresh fruit and vegetables.

• Fishing is banned within the boundaries of the marine reserve called THE RIP which is located on the southeast end of Direction Island.

• Under local law, the island retains the right to refuse Dogs and Cats from entering the island unless a valid vaccination certificate has been obtained

Travellers should boil all water thoroughly prior to drinking or stick to bottled water for the duration of their visit. Food should also be considered safe but all fish and meat should be thoroughly cooked before being eaten.

• Protection against Hepatitis A and B are recommended. Visitors should take due care when engaging in sexual activity or when dealing with needles.

• Travellers should avoid dehydration by wearing sunscreen and taking on plenty of fluids.

• Medical care on the island is limited and serious cases may be transferred to Perth for treatment.

• Shoes should always be removed if entering a mosque or house.

• Comfortable shorts, swimwear and other loose clothing recommended for the Cocos Islands themselves.
